Circus on ice is the synthesis of the various circus genres, figure skating and choreography. In this kind of art traditional circus which is familiar to everybody since childhood, is transformed and blended with new rhythms and colors. Figure skates become an additional means of artistic expression. The combination of ice and skates creates certain difficulties for the performer but at the same time they add a unique dynamic quality to the show! Unlike ballet on ice, circus on ice is characterized by the presence of a choreographic genre of the circus. Turns in the circus on ice are not taken mechanically from the ballet floor to the ice but they are specially prepared by producers and stage managers taking into account the specific character and requirements of this kind of art.

Moscow Circus on Ice is developing the wonderful, nearly 40-year old traditions of the precursors, teaching new performers and creating new turns. The artists of the group are young, attractive and professional. This is a company of soloists. The originality of each artist is in his professional multi-genre preparation. Here stars of figure skating rise into the air and Olympic champions in sport gymnastics demonstrate breath-taking acts in movement on ice. A group of jugglers dance samba with ravishing vigor performing the most complicated of tricks with clubs and bears perform figure skating technique.

A new program of Moscow Circus on Ice (General Director - Natalia Abramova) contains all the genres of circus art: juggling, acrobatics, animal training, equilibrium, gymnastics, and, of course, clownery.

The birth of the first and, at that time, the only "Circus on Ice" group in the world was a new landmark in the history of world circus. It was the final and greatest work of Arnold Gregoryevich Arnold, one of the greatest directors of the Soviet period. Having consolidated his working experience in variety theatres, circus, cinema and ballet on ice as well as inspiring his friends the best choreographers, artists, composers, writers and circus masters with his new idea, Arnold began his creative experiment in 1962. The cast was carefully selected, by audition, whereas the first genre of the laws of ice circus were found later. Two years of selfless work by the production group, the operating personnel and forty-seven novice artists passed before the opening night of the first circus show which took place on October 16, 1964.
Рождение первого, и, в то же время, единственного в мире коллектива "Цирк на льду" явилось новой вехой в истории мирового цирка. Это была последняя и лучшая работа величайшего режиссера "советской эпохи" Арнольда Григорьевича Арнольда. Обобщив свой опыт работы в варьете, цирке, кино, на эстраде, в балете на льду, заразив новой идеей своих друзей - лучших балетмейстеров, художников, композиторов, писателей и мастеров цирка, в 1962 году А.Арнольд начал творческий эксперимент. Тщательно, по конкурсу отбирался для обучения состав исполнителей, нащупывались первые жанровые законы для ледового цирка. Два года самоотверженной работы постановочной группы, технического состава и сорока семи начинающих артистов предшествовали премьере первого циркового спектакля, который состоялся 16 октября 1964 года.
The first audiences and even circus experts were amazed by the transformation of the habitual circus genres. Well known circus tricks combined with figure skating techniques made for surprising dynamics! And on top of that, new tricks were born! It should be pointed out that this was indeed an amusing show with a plot and dramatic parts of the main characters (musical comic actors and a clown), with carefully observed pace and rhythm, staged according to all the laws of the dramatic art and by means of circus turns.
Первые зрители и даже цирковые специалисты были поражены, как преображаются привычные цирковые жанры. Знакомые цирковые трюки соединенные с техникой фигурного катания на коньках приобретают удивительную динамичность! Мало того, рождаются новые трюки! Следует особо отметить, что это был веселый спектакль с сюжетом и актерскими ролями главных действующих лиц (музыкальные эксцентрики и клоун), с очень точно соблюдаемым темпо-ритмом, поставленный по всем законам драматургии и решенный средствами цирковых номеров.
The first tour abroad to Brussels Royal Circus in 1965 was a sensation. Since then the art of circus on ice has won world-wide recognition and occupied a niche in world show business. Unfortunately A. Arnold worked with his first group for a long period of, only seven years. He didn't have time to implement all his plans but he succeeded in training his followers who continue to professionally develop this new kind of art - circus on ice.
Первые зарубежные гастроли в Брюссельском королевском цирке в 1965 году произвели фурор! С этого времени искусство цирка на льду получило всемирное признание и заняло достойное место на мировом рынке шоу-бизнеса. К сожалению, А.Арнольд работал со своим первым коллективом недолго, всего семь лет. Он не успел реализовать всего задуманного, но успел воспитать последователей, которые продолжают развивать профессионально этот молодой вид искусства - цирк на льду.
At present the group of Moscow Circus on Ice continues to improve and enrich this beautiful art with new creative works, on its best traditions and guided by the precursors' experience.
